NosDa is Welsh for ‘Good Night’ which is exactly what we hope you’ll experience with us. We are a homegrown budget accommodation enterprise, very different from the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) Cardiff Hostel and other Bunkhouse offerings in Cardiff. We provide both individual travellers and groups with the best facilities and social environment to enjoy the Welsh capital at the cheapest possible prices.
NosDa came into being over 20 years ago. After coming back from a few years travelling the world, its founder, Sion Llewelyn became very frustrated with his career in the media industry. So against much advice, he decided to borrow loads of cash in the blind faith that the growing capital of his nation needed a special place for international travellers to stay, socialise and share his country’s distinct culture and beauty.
At the same time a renewed identity was being carved out as Wales became an increasingly distinct nation. The establishment of devolved government for Wales, our own Senedd (Parliament) distinct from English rule also coincided with the success of Welsh Rock Music (Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Super Furry Animals, etc) and Hollywood actors (Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mathew Rhys and Rhys Ifans) making a proud Welsh mark on the World. More recently Wales’ sporting successes in Football, Rugby and Cycling attest to the pride of a nation of just 3 million in punching above its weight
Sion had been inspired from his time travelling in the Southern Hemisphere, especially New Zealand which was trailblazing budget independent travel accommodation and activities at the time. Similar to Wales with a small population, NZ also enjoys two cultures, amazing landscape and a passion for Rugby and sheep!! They also both exist in continual sufferance of the ‘Superiority Complex’ of their larger next-door neighbours!!
Unbeknownst to Sion, the future founders of the Flying Pig Hostels in Amsterdam & Copenhagen Downtown Hostel were also backpacking in NZ at the same time. Arguably, this was a catalyst for the early development of independent hostels in Europe, an industry which has continued to grow exponentially ever since. Today, 20 years later, all of these are sister members of the St Christopher’s Hostel Network which has a presence in all of the major cities in Europe.
We regard our Staff as our best asset, and all the various online ratings attest to this. You need to be a special type of person to work at NosDa; multi-skilled, dedicated and extremely patient under pressure. Our ‘CRIW’ will always endeavour to meet your needs to the best of their ability under the circumstances. We have a core of local Welsh staff who have extensive knowledge of Cardiff and Wales, who are complimented by a team of dynamic multi-lingual international “individuals” who continually provide the enthusiasm which keeps this amazing family alive.
Welsh, International and Independent is what makes us unique. We aim to provide you with an amazing experience of the Welsh capital and when you leave you will know that you have been to a very different country and culture existing within the UK.
