NosDa's list of all things Christmassy
So, it’s that time of year again, cold hands meet warm hearts in the jolly wonderland that Cardiff becomes over the Christmas period.
For a start, from mid-November, a Bavarian style snow village is erected in front of the National Museum. Fully equipped with a Big Wheel, Ice-Skating rank and plenty of food stall chalets to eat and drink festive treats from! Find out more about Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland here!
If you are about town this time of year you are brave, to reward your courage the city hosts a Christmas market fayre on St Johns, Hills, Trinity’s and Working Street. Roughly two dozen exhibitors face the cold and set up shop over the whole Christmas period, selling anything from beautiful home-made wreaths that smell more like Christmas than Santa’s underpants to hand-crafted soaps and delicious foods. The city swells with festive aromas and as it gets dark and the lights come on, there’s nothing lovelier than sipping on hot mulled wine and people watching. Not sure about venturing out in the cold, there are some fun things to do indoors! For a start most coffee shops, pubs and bars have Christmas specials like cinnamon spiced lattes, proper indulgent hot chocolates, mulled wines and ciders. The arcades of Cardiff make a great place to wander around, sheltered from the wind, and there’s an eclectic collection of shops to see. Vintage clothing, pop-ups and independent gift and clothing stalls can be roamed and there’s nothing more special than catching sight of a stray snowflake inside the arcade! Here’s a list of the ten best places to get a hot chocolate with all the trimmings.
On December 1st with our friends from Pi&Hash Music, we host a Crimbo Party!
First up we have Isembard's Wheel, a powerfully poetic band of fiery folk-rockers, comprising a mad West-countryman and his ragtag band of wild, bardic-type animals! Next it’s Fountainhead, named after a bottle of fizzy water, Fountainhead started out playing clubs and festivals across the country before retreating into the Welsh Valleys with a multitrack recorder and a half empty bottle of tequila. Last but not least, it’s Thoby Davis after his trip busking across France one of our favourite musicians returns to close are bash with his amazing loop show :)
