I love Christmas. The warm atmosphere and the mulled wine, seeing family and having Buxfizz for breakfast. What I don't like is the amount of rubbish people insit on buying for each other. And it's not just the wrapping paper and needless novelty gadgets that break by boxing day, it's the belief people have that you need to buy stuff and waste money. Fret not, there are plenty of ways to make Christmas special without enlarging your carbon footprint, treat our planet instead of landfill!

A fun thing to do over the festive period is spend time with friends and mince pies making your own gifts! You don't need to be artsy or anything as there are plenty of cool things to craft with no talent. We tried making this advent wreath out of ginger bread and it turned out beautifully! We used tea lights but the classic thing to do is have four candles that you burn bit by bit until Christmas day! http://www.thegingerbreadartist.com/2014/11/advent-wreath-centerpiece-four-sundays.html
As Christmas is the giving period there are lots of people who get rid of their old belongings in view of getting new things! Take advantage of this, I found a plastic Christmas tree in the bin in late November and it's now refreshed and looks lovely in my living room! This is also true for charity shops and donation websites!
Cardiff's St John's Baptist Church is one of the many charities offering quite a decent range of gifts, wrapping paper and cards so if you are going to buy, buy smart!
